KickStarter One Million Backers

KickStarter One Million Backers
"Last week a woman named Rachel Perrie pledged to a film project called Cargo. At that moment she became the millionth person to have ever backed a Kickstarter project.
Rachel backed the film because she knew the creator. People often support people they know on Kickstarter. People also back projects they discover via blog posts, tweets, Facebook, and our own site and newsletter. Whether to a friend or a stranger, a pledge simply says “I like what you’re doing and I’d like to be a part of it.”

Thanks to these million people there are plays, comics, albums, books, video games, urban farms, documentaries, exhibits, performances, and thousands more creative works out in the world. Many couldn’t exist without their support, and all are certainly better for it. It’s a remarkable thing."

"Occupy isn’t just a movement, it’s a movie, and the Internet is its production house. Filmmakers Audrey Ewell and Aaron Aites teamed up to create a movie about the Occupy events, using footage submitted by people across the country. Like many underfunded artists and inventors before them, they took to the crowdfunding site Kickstarter to raise the $17,500 they need for the bare movie-making essentials.
The Occupy film, called “99% — The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film,” has until January 13 to raise thousands more, Wired reported.
Films are just one type of the various artistic and technical endeavors that have used Kickstarter in an attempt to get off the ground."

This Could Be The Mortgage Lawsuit That Blows Up In JPMorgan's Face

This Could Be The Mortgage Lawsuit That Blows Up In JPMorgan's Face

"Another lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase is brewing in California, and this one has the potential to blow up big.
It claims JPMorgan Chase systemically engaged in forgery to gain an upper-hand in thousands of bankruptcy cases since 2009. [via Huffington Post]
The lawsuit, which is still waiting to obtain official class-action designation by the California court system, alleges that JPMorgan Chase fabricated mortgage-related documents in thousands of bankruptcy cases to make a profit and remove itself from the responsibility of money-losing mortgages.
The complaint claims that documents were "photo-shopped" to show Chase had the rights to money due under mortgage loans, allowing the bank to obtain "relief from stay" motions in bankruptcy court."

A Breakdown of the First Battle of the Great Megaupload War of 2012

A Breakdown of the First Battle of the Great Megaupload War of 2012
" the U.S. government took down Megaupload, one of the largest file-sharing sites in the world. Here’s a quick recap of the key events in this crazy story:
  • Megaupload is one of top 100 most-visited websites on the web for years, mostly because it was an easy and relatively “safe” way to download and transfer pirated content. Yes, people hosted legal stuff there, but the vast majority of it was pirated.
  • On December 9, a bizarre video was released with A-listers seemingly endorsing Megaupload. P Diddy, Will.i.am, Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West were among the stars featured.
  • Universal and the RIAA were NOT happy with this, so they asked YouTube to take it down due to copyright infringement,. They succeeded, though Megaupload continued to host the video (YouTube eventually brought it back as well). Megaupload essentially gave the music industry the middle finger.
  • Everything exploded yesterday, though"

Why U.S. Gun Sales Are Shooting For The Moon

Why U.S. Gun Sales Are Shooting For The Moon
"If James Anthony Bailey and P.T. Barnum had seen the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) they just might have conceded their “Greatest Show on Earth” needed more guns, sideshows and characters. Because come one, come all, the SHOT Show has no comparison on Earth and, in fact, is especially interesting this year because gun sales are breaking records."

Supreme Court rules Congress can re-copyright public domain works

Supreme Court rules Congress can re-copyright public domain works
"
Congress may take books, musical compositions and other works out of the public domain, where they can be freely used and adapted, and grant them copyright status again, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.
In a 6-2 ruling, the court ruled that just because material enters the public domain, it is not “territory that works may never exit.” (PDF)
The top court was ruling on a petition by a group of orchestra conductors, educators, performers, publishers and film archivists who urged the justices to reverse an appellate court that ruled against the group, which has relied on artistic works in the public domain for their livelihoods.
They claimed that re-copyrighting public works would breach the speech rights of those who are now using those works without needing a license. There are millions of decades-old works at issue. Some of the well-known ones include H.G. Wells’ Things to Come; Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and the musical compositions of Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky."

The Excuses Culture: Why We PROTECT OURSELVES With Excuses

The Excuses Culture: Why We PROTECT OURSELVES With Excuses

"When was the last time you made a resolve to achieve something, set a deadline and then achieved it? Can you even remember the last time? I’m struggling. And the reason I am struggling to remember such a time is because of excuses. I make them for everything; consciously and unconsciously. Without noticing it, excuses have become a habit that I am struggling to shake.
In this post I want to talk about the excuses culture that we have develop within ourselves and why we use excuses to protect ourselves from feelings of failure and fear. Hopefully it will spur some readers out there into action."

RT @StephenieZ Do you ever wonder what makes some people so confident?

"Do you ever wonder what it is about some people that makes them so confident? So completely comfortable in their skin and radiating such positive, charismatic energy? I used to wonder this too. And then I learned that confidence really comes down to one INCREDIBLY SIMPLE thing.

Owning it.

When you’re “owning it,” it means that you’re totally and completely at peace with WHO YOU ARE in every moment, interaction and experience. You make no apologies for being awkward, nervous, excited, loud, soft spoken or other… you’re just you."

23 VERY Successful People Who Get Up REALLY EARLY!

23 VERY Successful People Who Get Up REALLY EARLY!
"Most business leaders get up early.
This trait was common to 17 CEOs surveyed by Jim Citrin at Yahoo! Finance a few years ago. And it's a trait we expect from CEOs.
They are go-getters who want to start the day before their peers and competitors, who want to work long hours and have enough time for their personal life too.
Many function unbelievably well on little sleep. Others may not function well but are driven by the stress of running a company to get up anyway.
We identified a bunch of successful people who get up early. Let us know who we missed."

The Case For A 21-Hour Work Week
"It would create jobs and stop the unsustainable cycle of rampant consumerism. Sure, it would also require a wholesale reordering of our economy, but that might happen whether we like it or not."
